Christmas gifts for grandparents in Australia

The hardest person to buy for is the one who says they do not need anything — and they usually mean it. What they tend not to have is somewhere to spend an afternoon. An Australian Christmas falls in summer: a hammock is not another object for the cupboard, it is a reason to be outside in the shade.

Three, by what you want to spend

Where will they hang it?

You need two solid anchor points roughly 3.5 to 4 metres apart — veranda posts, a pergola, two established trees. You will also need two carabiners and adjustable straps from any hardware or camping store; we do not sell those, and we would rather say so than have you find out after the parcel arrives.

What if it is not right?

Bought between 1 November and 24 December, it can come back until 31 January — and you may hang it to try it, which does not void the return. No restocking fee, full refund. Full terms.

Will it arrive in time?

We dispatch from the Sunshine Coast in 1 to 2 business days; delivery is 3 to 5 business days to metro areas and 7 to 10 to regional Australia, free anywhere in the country.

Why this hammock and not a $60 one

Every piece is woven by Santa Luzia in São Bento, Paraíba, working since 1986. The cotton is organic and, in several pieces, naturally coloured — the shade is grown rather than dyed. Certified organic by Ecocert; Santa Luzia holds the World Crafts Council Award of Excellence, recommended by UNESCO. Around 400 families in Paraíba are part of the production chain. The full story.

Questions

Is a hammock a good gift for an older person?

It is, provided they have two anchor points about 3.5 to 4 metres apart — veranda posts, a pergola, two solid trees. A hammock sits lower and is easier to get into than most people expect, and the fabric takes your shape rather than pressing back. If they have a spot in the shade they already like sitting in, a hammock belongs there.

What if they cannot hang it themselves?

Most of our customers hang the hammock for the person as part of giving it. You need two carabiners and adjustable straps, which any hardware or camping store sells for well under $50 — we do not sell them ourselves. If there are no anchor points at all, a free-standing frame is the alternative, also from a general retailer.

What if it does not suit them?

Anything bought between 1 November and 24 December can be returned until 31 January, and you may hang it to try it — putting it up indoors or under cover does not void the return. There is no restocking fee; the refund is the full purchase price. You cover the postage back to us on the Sunshine Coast.

Will it arrive before Christmas?

We dispatch from the Sunshine Coast in 1 to 2 business days. Delivery runs 3 to 5 business days to metropolitan areas and 7 to 10 to regional Australia. Ordering by the first week of December leaves comfortable margin anywhere in the country. Shipping is free Australia-wide.

How much weight does a hammock hold?

Each piece has its own rating, listed as Max Load on its page. Across the collection they run from 140kg to 200kg, so they carry an adult comfortably with room to spare.

Are they hard to look after?

Hand wash in cold water and dry flat or hanging. Bring it in during heavy rain or when it will be unused for a long stretch. Cotton lasts for years under cover; what shortens a hammock's life is leaving it out in weather all season.
